Diabetes Nutrition: Eating out when you have diabetes

traveling-with-diabetes

There is no reason you shouldn’t enjoy a meal in a restaurant if you have diabetes. All it takes is a little bit of effort in selecting the right dish and you will be fine. Check out restaurants which serve healthy foods like whole wheat pastas, sandwiches, wheat idlis, dosas and brown rice dishes. Let your friends and acquaintances know that you have diabetes so they pick a restaurant which is healthy for you. Try out healthy dishes on the menu and have fun like any other person!

Plan in advance before you go out for a meal
  1. Understand that you need to get your meals on time so get to the restaurant at least 30-45 minutes before your regular lunch/dinner time.

  2. Call the restaurant in advance for a booking and also ask if they can take special requests. For example, can they make your salad dressing without sugar and add a substitute instead.

Ordering on the menu
  1. Study the menu carefully and see if the dishes have the right combination of carbohydrates, protein and fats. For example, if you are thinking of a pizza, see if they can get you a whole wheat pizza with lots of veggies and low-fat cheese.

  2. Ask the steward for the portion size so that you do not end up eating more than usual.

  3. Avoid foods that are deep fried. If your dish comes with a side order of French fries, ask for mashed potatoes instead.

  4. Go for grilled or roasted foods.

  5. If you are ordering something like butter masala dosa, ask to hold the butter!

  6. Do not go for more than one alcoholic drink!

  7. Most importantly, avoid buffets!

  8. If you are having a dessert, get one without cream like a plain brownie. Make sure you get your insulin shot or medication to make up for the sugar rush!

  9. If you are going for a fresh fruit juice, ask to withhold the sugar. Ask for sugar substitute sachets so you can add to your taste.

Carry your medications or insulin shots.

If you need to take your medication before your meals do so on time. Carry your insulin shot and take it as soon as the food arrives. Do not take the shot and wait for the meals to arrive! We hope you have fun eating out with family and friends!
