Diabetes and dental care: Keep your mouth healthy

mouth-health

Diabetes affects all parts of the body including the mouth. People with diabetes are prone to chronic caries (tooth decay and loss) and other gum diseases. Apart from this, diabetes and related medications cause dry mouth leading to soreness and other infections. If you have diabetes, make sure you keep your mouth healthy with our tips.

Tips for a healthy mouth

Stay hydrated.

The most important part of maintaining a healthy mouth is staying hydrated. Drink plenty of water at frequent intervals to prevent bacteria formation.

Use a medicated toothpaste.

Ask your dentist for a toothpaste which prevents bacterial growth, gum inflammation and bleeding. Use it regularly along with a mouthwash.

Brush twice and floss.

Along with regular brushing at least twice a day, it is also important to floss. This keeps the spaces between the teeth clean.

Quit smoking!

Smoking has many negatives. Avoid it totally when you have diabetes.

Dentures and braces.

If you wear dentures or braces for teeth correction you need to be extra cautious and brush with each meal.

Regular dental checkups.

Make it a point to get regular dental checkups for early detection of caries or gum diseases.

Keep your blood glucose in check.

This is the only way of preventing tooth loss and gum diseases.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Include a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables. Get plenty of carrot, apple and cucumber which freshens your mouth and cleans out your teeth.
