Mulberry leaf extract has been clinically tested and proven to be effective in weight management. As discussed earlier, mulberry leaves can control the body weight indirectly in two ways, that is, by lowering blood sugar levels and by controlling cholesterol levels. In addition, it also reduces appetite. In a study, an extract of Japanese white mulberry was given to 46 overweight people. An average weight loss of 20 pounds was noticed within a span of 3 months. In addition, parameters like waist circumference and thigh circumference were also found to decrease in these participants. This effect on body weight was mainly due to the ability of the extract to block alpha glucosidase (Villa G et-al), thus preventing buildup of excess sugar and the conversion of sugar into fats.
Mulberry leaf extract is currently being used in a large number of health supplements. It is suggested to take up to 100 mg of this extract two to three times per day. Mulberry is a non-toxic substance and thus can be safely consumed. However, it is better to avoid these supplements during pregnancy and lactation as they have not been evaluated during these stages. Since leaves are mostly caffeine-free and tannin-free, they can be safely consumed
