Research has ascertained that there is a clear link between obesity and diabetes, especially type II diabetes. Obesity triggers overall changes in the body’s metabolism. These changes lead to the release of fat molecules from the adipose tissue, directly into the blood. This makes cells less responsive to insulin leading to diabetes. Bitter melon can increase the insulin sensitivity in these patients. Thus it has the potency to control the occurrence of diabetes both directly and indirectly (by controlling obesity). Some studies were carried to study the effect of seed extract of bitter melon on the body weights and cholesterol levels. The results show dose-dependent reductions in body weights and cholesterol levels (Hasani-Ranjbar et al). A few other studies also suggest that the fruit helps in reducing visceral fats. Based on these studies, it is suggested that bitter melon can also act as an efficient anti-obesity agent.
Apart from weight management, this fruit offers several other health benefits also. As it is rich in vitamins having antioxidant properties, it is effective in providing protection from cancer. It reduces the occurrence of respiratory infections like pneumonia. It boosts up the natural immunity and lowers inflammation. It treats problems associated with the gastrointestinal system like abdominal pain and constipation. It reduces the incidences of stomach and intestinal disorders and improves the functioning of the liver. It reduces the incidences of fevers and coughs.
